Who is Liberty Mutual?

Liberty Mutual began as the Massachusetts Employees Insurance Association after a state workers’ compensation law created demand for employer coverage. It adopted the Liberty Mutual name in 1917 and grew from workers’ compensation into personal, commercial, specialty, and global insurance.

The Liberty Mutual organization uses multiple brands and distribution channels. Liberty acquired Safeco in 2008 and is retiring the Safeco consumer brand, though legacy Safeco-issued policies may still use Safeco-specific servicing routes. Its official independent-agent site says more than 20,000 agencies sell Liberty Mutual products. Product branding, underwriting company, and access can differ between personal lines, independent-agent offerings, and commercial operations.
